It has been approximately ten years since "learner autonomy" was introduced as an educational objective in the foreign language teaching programmes of the French primary and secondary school systems.
The author comments on the way this "new" objective was and is still being introduced, stating that there is a discrepancy between "autonomy" as used in official guidelines and "learner’s ability to direct learning", in CRAPEL’s terms, following Henri Holec.
