LE DECLIN DES METHODOLOGIES : FIN DE SIECLE OU ERE NOUVELLE ?

COSTE, Daniel

This article analyses some of the trends in the fields of lan-guage didactics and of the extension of foreign languages which have influenced the discussion on teaching metho-dology and contributed to the decline of the debate on teaching models and practices over the past thirty years.

The author analyses in particular the manner in which :

- methodological models have tended to lose sway, giving way to eclectism as a means to deal with complexity,

- the field of language didactics has split into different spe-cialised sub-domains, each one developing its own analygic criteria, with no given the consideration development of common concepts,

- the development of language teaching business aspects on the development of commercial language teaching an inter-national basis has reinforced the trend towards the development of " soft " wide-ranging methodological ap-proaches.

The author then suggests some of the directions that a renewed methodological " era "could take : including the reinforcement of scientific research, definitio of general options for the curricula, and an increase in the importance attributed to attention given to ethical aspects of curriculum development.
