ETHNOGRAPHIE COMPAREE DE LA SALLE DE CLASSE EN FRANCE ET EN GRANDE BRETAGNE

CARTON, Francis

This article reports on the first phase of a research project which aims to elucidate the cultural differences which exist between French and British secondary schools. Interviews were conducted with French teacher trainees working in British secondary schools and British ‘assistants’ who had spent a year in French lycées. This led to the development of an analytic framework based on the practical experience of teachers working in foreign secondary schools. This framework, which will be used in later stages of the project, takes into account the ways in which time is managed, the use and functions of school buildings and of classroom space, ideas concerning the role and functions of teachers, personal appearance, and physical contact between individuals.
