L’APPROCHE MACRO-LINGUISTIQUE DU FONCTIONNEMENT DES LANGUES ET SES IMPLICATIONS PEDAGOGIQUES : ROLE DU VISUEL

This article considers the function and choice of visual aids in the teaching/learning of languages in the light of recent work on communicative competence.

An attempt at describing the relationships that hold between visual and verbal in real communicative exchanges is made by taking excerpts from comic strips and television for detailed examination.

Such an analysis shows that real communication consists of a network of interaction between the verbal and the non verbal components. It is the function of the visual element to provide the necessary information for the verbal element to be interpreted as an authentic act of communication by specifying the circumstances identifying the participants and by providing a channel for non-verbal messages.

In pedagogical materials that claim to expose the learner to authentic audio-visual communcation, on the other hand, it is shown that the selection and role of the visual component is distorted since it is based on pedagological rather than communicative priorities. The resulting materials do not help in the acquisition of communicative competence and indeed may act as an obstacle to it.

The article concludes with a series of practical suggestions for the language teacher : in the absence of any formal description of communicative acts one should not be prevented from trying to expose the learner to audio-visual materials with a genuine communicative function, in particular by using authentic recordings.
