VERS UNE REDEFINITION DE LA COMPREHENSION ECRITE EN LANGUE ETRANGERE

The foreign student of English who has acquired a good grounding in the morphology, syntax and lexis of the language may perfectly well understand the meaning of each individual sentence in a text, and yet miss the sense of the text as a whole by failing to recognise these elements which give it coherence.

A number of such text-structuring phenomena are described and discussed from a teaching standpoint. An appreciation of the overall meaning of a text requires an awareness and understanding of coherence-producing features such as tense sequence, pro-words and pro-expressions, operators rendering explicit intratextual and logical relationships and the ability to perceive the relationships in the absence of operators. The complete understanding of a text should include that of its perlocutionary functions (of which some of their manifestations found in the press are described), but it is felt that priority should be given to teaching foreign students how to extract rapidly and accurately the essential, purely informational from a text.

Future work will thus be devoted to seeking a formalized method for the identification of essential textual information and to investigating the depth of comprehension of foreign students reading in their mother tongue. A redefinition of the concept of reading comprehension will thus hopefully be developped.
