FORMATION LINGUISTIQUE DE TRAVAILLEURS IMMIGRES : OBSERVATION D’UN STAGE INTENSIF EN ENTREPRISE

This article reports on observations made during an intensive course in French for migrant workers. The main aim of this project was to study course materials as they are actually used ; and for this reasons special attention was paid to :

a) teacher discourse which, although an essential component of any classroom methodology, does not in fact appear in the pedagological materials ;

b) learner discourse which is a useful indication of the relevance of the course materials to the learners’ actual needs ;

c) the proportion of teacher talk v. learner talk, since this plays an important role in making efficient any course based on the acquisition of responses.

Such a study is valuable because it shows how learners’ aims influence the use which is made of course materials. The most striking example of this is the way in which the course, which was basically oral to begin with, concentrated more and more on the written language : this was due to the fact that the workers wished to improve their chances of promotion and that to do so meant acquiring the relevant communicative skills, such as reading instructions and writing reports. This puts the teachers under considerable pressure to adapt the course to the learners’ needs ; but they are not pedagogically equipped to deal with the types of problem which then occur, and they tend simply to fall back on traditional classroom methodology.

Such a study shows that the most urgent problem in this field is the development of a methodology which takes into account the linguistic needs of workers in the communicative situations with which they are faced, i.e. primarily in their working life.
