When he reaches University level, the student who has learnt English in the French school system is still confronted with morpho-syntactic and lexical difficulties when reading a text ; furthermore he is hindered by the way he approaches the text. In order to help him achieve an active and receptive reading, the author proposes the following method : the reading of the first sentence of each paragraph, preliminary to the reading of the whole text. This enables the student to spot the major pieces of information, to structure the text at the macroscopic level, to predict the content of the paragraphs and to localize the information. After describing the method, the author considers specific applictions and points to limitations caused by the nature of some texts.
