INFLUENCES D’UN ENSEIGNEMENT DE LANGUE MATERNELLE SUR L’APPRENTISSAGE D’UNE LANGUE ETRANGERE : REFLEXIONS A PARTIR DU DISCOURS D’APPRENANTS

GREMMO, Marie-José

This article discusses aspects of the way in which an adult’s educational past influences his learning procedures. Based on an analysis of the discourse of students participating in the C.R.A.P.E.L.’s self-directed learning scheme, it shows how the instruction they received about their mother-tongue when they were school pupils has led to the unconscious development of certain ideas about language and language acquisition which influence their language learning.

Some of the characteristics seem to pertain to the nature of mother-tongue teaching (moment of teaching, importance of analytical procedures, cultural aims) but others reveal misconceptions (emphasis on the written form of the language, normative approach, a certain theoretical and technological lag). The article then tries to determine how mother-tongue teaching and foreign language teaching should differ.
