L’ANGLAIS DANS LES FACULTES SCIENTIFIQUES : POURQUOI, QUAND, COMMENT ?

This paper describes and compares the different English programmes run in two facilties of the University of Nancy. At the Science Faculty, foreign languages are compulsory in the first two years, long before they become useful to the budding scientist. At the Faculty of Pharmacy, short courses in English have just been introduced for students in their fourth and fifth years.

The organisation of these courses is described and their efficiency assessed ; it is concluded that the best time to introduce English in Science syllabuses is when the students begin to have actual needs that are to be met in short, needs-based courses.
