POUR UNE DIDACTIQUE DES STRATEGIES CONVERSATIONNELLES

CARTON, Francis

Language usage is not a mould to which speakers are obliged to confrom : it is an interactive, collaborative process which reflects their individual personalities. An approach to teaching conversational strategies in a second language should not attempt, therefore, to force learners to behave in ways prescribed on the basis of linguistic descriptions : rather, it should aim at helping learners by making them aware of themselves and their interlocutors as individuals who differ in various ways, so that they can make a real choice as to wether or not they will adopt the target-language communicative behaviours. This article describes ways in which this awareness can be developed as regards practical face-to-face conversations with clearly identifiable extra-linguistic aims.
