Can "civilisation" be taught ?

The value of authentic documents in foreign language teaching is no longer questioned. Most of the time, though, they are only used as a way of achieving linguistic ends and their inherent cultural interest is neglected. Two training programs run at the C.R.A.P.E.L. for teachers of French as a foreign language raised the issue of how to integrate cultural objectives into language courses. Two curricula developed are described and explained and examples of the materials used are given together with a number of suggestions based on the experiences described here.
